Liveliness returned with a vengeance at IAS in 2022! After two years of lockdowns, working-from-home advice, travel restrictions and video calls, IAS opened the doors again to its vibrant community. A parade of events, group meetings, individual scholars and research teams entered our building, resulting in lively joint lunches and inspiring conversations in our common room. IAS is widely acknowledged as an innovative intermediary between all faculties and as an international hub for advanced interdisciplinary studies. Groups working on the UvA’s Research Priority Areas (RPAs) and the Strategic Plan have found their way to IAS and developed productive ways of collaborating with each other. Our international speakers, fellows and guest contributed to many of our core themes. We opened a fourth research theme Digital Society and Infrastructures, and in addition to our Foundations and Methods program we started a second cross-cutting theme about the Governance of Complexity.
Throughout all interdisciplinary and interfaculty collaborations, IAS continues to invite people to focus on complex societal and scientific challenges, methodological innovation and integration, theory construction and modelling. Our mission is more important than ever. This year started with a lockdown, then saw the invasion and the war in Ukraine, and we are all eyewitnesses of the consequences of climate change. Together with our Artists in Residence and our partners from government, society and industry we continue our search for novel ways of doing research and engaging with societal and scientific challenges. This report offers an overview of our activities and highlights some of the key-events. We hope you find inspiration in them and that our activities trigger your imagination.
